Central Iowa Water Trails August Update

Exciting News for Water Trails

Summer has been a busy time for Central Iowa Water Trails. A number of regional Central Iowa Water Trails access points were constructed and recently opened,  allowing increased connectivity with the waterways:

  • The City of Johnston announced a new partnership with an outfitter, Quarry Springs Outfitters, to offer kayak rentals at the recently open NW 70th Avenue access point along Beaver Creek
  • Polk County Conservation completed their latest access point at Mally’s Park to Fourmile Creek.
  • West Des Moines opened their new boathouse Thursday at Raccoon River Park, offering rentals on non-motorized boats like paddle boards, canoes, kayaks and paddleboats.

Design and permitting work is currently underway for Scott Avenue and three corresponding regional sites, Prospect Park, Birdland Marina, and Harriet Street. These sites were included in the Federal BUILD Grant awarded to Central Iowa Water Trails for $25 million. Construction is anticipated to begin in late 2021.
