The Great Outdoors Foundation continues to sponsor at-risk youth and therapy rider scholarships at Jester Park Equestrian Center. Youth attend a one-day horse camp which includes introduction to horses, safety, horse care, grooming, saddling, and riding. These programs promote character development, confidence, communication and teamwork, creative problem solving, trust, and physical and emotional wellness.
More than 65,000 Greater Des Moines Regional Trail Maps are distributed annually thanks in part to funding from the Great Outdoors Foundation. The map is a favorite for trail enthusiasts and helps local residents and visitors spend more time outdoors on the vast and excellent trail system in Central Iowa.
More than 1,000 trees are distributed annually in the greater Des Moines metropolitan area. This program is a joint effort of MidAmerican Energy, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Polk County Conservation, Central Iowa Arbor Society and the Great Outdoors Foundation. This program encourages residents to purchase low cost trees to plant in their yards.
